Mullen Softball Falls to Regis Jesuit

Hank Hooper, Associate Athletic Director
When Mullen and Regis Jesuit get together, there is always the potential for a classic encounter.  On Saturday at Doc Scavuzzo Softball Field on the campus of Mullen High School, it appeared to  be another one for the archives.  Appearances, however, can quickly change.  The pitching was the dominant factor through the first two innings, and then the third inning showed up.  Regis began the inning with a couple of walks and secured a lead with a 2-RBI  double.  From there disaster struck.  Mullen committed three-straight errors allowing four more runs to score, and Regis never looked back.  Mullen secured two outs on the next two batters, but Regis was able to tack on another run before taking a 7-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning.
Mullen kept Regis quiet in the 4th and in the bottom of that same inning was able to run two across the plate on two Regis errors to reduce the margin to 2-7.

The confident Regis bats became relentless in the 5th and 6th innings.  They scored 3-runs in the 5th and an additional 4-runs in the 6th to take the Catholic school showdown, 2-14.

It wasn’t as if Mullen was void of play in the field or at the plate.  There were times Mullen batters blistered the ball.  The perfect example was when Morgan Stewart ripped a line drive shot over the head of the centerfielder.  It was the best hit ball of the day for anybody.  In the field, the same thing.  Snatching line drives and making textbook plays on grounders were highlight reel plays.  Mullen just could not put those hits together to make a rally, and the accuracy of some of their throws was off on Saturday.  The point being these young ladies just need to keep doing what they are doing with the intent on getting better each and every day.  Eventually, those timely hits will come with runs to follow, and the errors will diminish.  Let’s go Mustangs!  You got this!
